  • For budget purposes, it is recommended that you design your set as soon as possible to determine what special set pieces will need to be built.


SCT maintains an inventory of pre-built items for set construction, including Platforms, Flats (walls), Stairs, and Doors/Frames. A full inventory is in progress – when available, this document will be updated. Until this inventory is available, work with the Stage Supervisor to confirm availability. These pre-built items are used from show to show and must NOT be fundamentally altered or disassembled. If you are unsure about what you can do with a pre-built piece, please confirm with the Stage Supervisor.

Materials and Tools

You are welcome to use any of the lumber or building materials at SCT. If additional building materials are needed, please purchase them, retaining any receipts for reimbursement. See the reimbursement section for the process. Paint and lumber are not typically charged to a show’s budget, but specialized building materials that cannot be retained and reused for future shows may be applied to a show’s budget. If unsure, contact the Executive Committee for guidance.

  • SCT Provides the following basic tools:

Set build can begin as soon as the prior show’s set is struck, typically the afternoon after closing night. Please coordinate with the director of the prior show to schedule your build. It is recommended that you inform the prior director (and Stage Supervisor) of the pre-built set items used in the prior set that you’ll need for your set. That way, during strike, those items can be set aside for your build rather than stored away. It is your responsibility as director to schedule and coordinate your set build, but the set supervisor can assist with this process. Strike typically occurs either Saturday night directly after closing, or the following morning.  It is your responsibility to ensure that you have completed strike prior to 2pm on the Sunday after closing night unless alternative arrangements have been made with the next director. Make sure all actors/crew are aware of strike time, they are expected to help. Organize the chaos and delegate assignments. Be sure that any pre-built flats or platforms are not disassembled during strike. When in doubt, ask the Stage Supervisor.

  • Checklist:
    • Green Room should be cleaned and vacuumed; counters/mirrors cleaned; costumes returned to anyone who loaned them to us.
    • All backstage wastebaskets and trash emptied, and new liners inserted.
    • Stage and wings must be swept.
    • Wood room must be swept.
    • Organize all paint cans and supplies and put in proper places.
    • All FIRE EXITS and WALKWAYS must be clear!
    • Be sure to thank your cast/crew for all their hard work…and thank you!
